At first sight, Ianto Jones appears to be a rather conservative fellow. He's quiet by nature, almost secretive in everything he does. Then again, working for an agency like Torchwood does nothing to help that.

Under the power of Jack Harkness, he cleans up the team's messes and mainly manages the deaths and records of those associated with the Torchwood Institute, mainly to avoid any triggers or awakenings for retconned memories. This is to protect the privacy of the group and their going-ons.

Ianto is something of a romantic (in a very dim light), falling in love completely and remaining loyal to what he really loves. While his job is important, he finds that he is abused often by his team members. While he has a soft, gentle sort of intelligence about him, he is also extremely bitter. Not one to voice these concerns, though, his thoughts on the group are not often brought up. Instead, he puts out a fairly warm disposition by offering coffee and tea on occasion.

Before he was assigned to Captain Jack's Torchwood 3, he worked in Torchwood 1 with his long-term girlfriend, Lisa Hallett. She was his very dear to him and he felt he could be no closer to any person but her. She understood his quiet nature, his methodical thinking and often shared these sentiments, but with kinder, softer words. She was his everything, and once she had been nearly completely converted to a Cyberman, he saved her and brought to hide her in the basement of the Torchwood 3 complex.

He wanted to do anything he could to save her, to return her to complete human form so that he might be with her again and end her pain. However, this does cause trouble for Captain Jack as well as himself. When she is killed, he finds every day he goes through filled with pain, the memories still very much alive in the back of his mind.

No matter the hate, the anger he might have for the rest of the team, for Jack specifically, he does not stop working for the team when he's given the chance to return. He knows now that people see him in a different light, even if he does work the same job. He knows that they will respect him because beneath quiet smiles or glances, there is very much a pained human being.

And somehow, he knows he can't leave his job because of that.
